Excerpt from The Colony Cats

Doc gave Ox and Ollie the signal to watch his flank while he moved through the gate and into the Thompson's yard. This would be a perilous adventure. The last time Doc came to this trash, the girls almost killed him with a shovel. Doc had been hungry throughout the day and Ollie and Ox hadn't found anything to share, so he had to play this last card; visiting the yard of the Thompson girls, Valarie and Jane. Doc curled is lips as he prepared Ollie and Ox, “We control this environment and every turn of the paw. We should not be scared of anyone, we are cats!” Ollie and Ox were not cats at all but the conviction of Doc in the his delivery of those words gave them every confidence, so they headed toward the trash. Ollie climbed the garden hose up to the spigot where he could perch for a better view. Ox squeezed behind a clay planter next to the entry gate leading into the yard; but being rather large and clumsy, he knocked a broken shard of clay from the pot and it fell to the pavers below with a sharp, tinkling sound. Everyone froze and listened for the high-pitched voices and clicking heels of the girls; but none came. Doc shot a disapproving look to the racoon. "Be careful!", hissed Ollie. Doc snaked his way between the patio furniture and flower pots, past the recycle bins, toward the waste containers. He moved around the trash can, looking for a way to lay it down and sniff for any food he might find inside. Sam rubbed against the side or the can with his hip, and then gave it a shove. The can teetered on its edge and tipped into the shrubbery, sliding down and landing cleanly between the gardeners work boots and the ugly garden gnome Mr. Thompson 'rescued' in Germany. The same gnome Mrs. Thompson chose to display by the garbage cans. In the entire movement, not a single sound was made. "Cat perfect.", he whispered.

The Colony Cats

A Feral Mystery Beneath the Suburbs

In the quiet streets of a leafy suburban neighborhood, a secret war is brewing—and it’s not among the humans.

Doc, a scarred stray with a tactical mind and a hidden past, leads a coalition of cats, raccoons, and misfits who patrol the shadows of a place they call The Colony. Life here is a delicate balance of instinct, alliance, and territory—until strange disruptions begin to tip the scales. Birds vanish. Squirrels act like spies. Animal Control prowls like it's hunting more than strays.

When rumors spread of an invisible force unraveling the natural order, Doc and his crew—ranging from pampered housecat Charlie to a pair of chaotic raccoon twins—must uncover the truth. Their search leads to a conspiracy stretching from the storm drains to the treetops, threatening to erase the fragile harmony they’ve clawed out.

Part mystery, part adventure, and all heart, The Colony Cats is a captivating tale of survival, wild instincts, and the unlikely heroes who walk rooftops and fence lines while no one is watching. It’s Watership Down meets The Warriors—but with more fur, more sass, and way more attitude.

Will Doc’s gang be enough to stop the collapse? Or will The Colony become just another ghost story whispered by the neighborhood’s last survivors?
